Exercise Philosophy
Posture First
Functional Strength Training starts with posture. This is the
foundation of a good fitness program. Good posture is proof
that the body is balanced. Once we establish this balance, we
can build more dynamic strength on top of it.
Adding Functional Movement
Basic, functional movement is the cornerstone of Functional
Strength Training. We do not try to re-invent something that
already works. The body is an amazing machine. It doesn't
need to be improved by adding artificial range of motion with
machines. We can get a better, more natural workout without
machines. Keeping it basic is the key to success.
Minimal Equipment
When we use external props, they are minimal. We use
medicine balls, dumbbells, and obstacles. We walk on our
hands, climb up polls, and swing across the monkey bars.
It's amazing how much strength, endurance, and power can
be developed with these simple tools.
Fun Fun Fun
If it's not fun, why do it? Who needs the "no pain, no gain"
mentality when you can workout with the "play to be fit"
philosophy? After attending a workout, you will find that there
is a looseness to the workouts. There is some structure, but
there is also room to express yourself through motion
without having rigid rules to hold you down.
Think "Movements" not "Muscles"
Everyday you ask your body to move in a variety of ways, but
the weight room in a typical gym does not prepare you for
these movements at all. There is a huge difference in
philosophy between FST and typical gyms, which tend to
have rows and rows of useless machines. Those gyms are
"reductionist" gyms. They break the body down into a bunch of
independent parts.
Holistic Concepts
FST workouts build on holistic concepts rather than
reductionism. We do not do specific exercises just to train
specific muscles. We do exercises to train movements. With
proper movement re-established, the right muscles will get
strong in proportion to each other. So you will not be
over-developed in any one area of your body.

The first step is re-establishing good balance in the form of proper posture.
