about to lace up your shoes and then you thought of something else
you needed to do.  All of a sudden you had to do your laundry or pluck
your eyebrows.  Motivation can be a tough barrier to overcome.
Understanding what motivates you can be a great way to tackle this
obstacle.  I recommend doing this little exercise.  It should only take
about 15 minutes.

Instructions:
STEP 1:
Grab a pen and get ready to write.  Write down statements that define
your views of fitness and overall health.  These might sound something
like, “my dad always makes me practice,” or “I feel a rush of
adrenaline  when I workout.”  What motivates you?  Imagining your
ideal body?  Being complimented on your appearance?  A better self
image?  For about 5 minutes, just write down any statements that you
can think of.

STEP 2:
Now you’re going to categorize those statements according to the
following:

INTERNAL MOTIVATION VS. EXTERNAL MOTIVATION
-Internal Motivation is true motivation.  This manifests as a fire inside of
you.  A burning desire to be fit and healthy.
-External Motivation is motivation coming from the outside. It is less like
motivation and more like pressure from outside forces.

INTRINSIC REWARD VS. EXTRINSIC REWARD
These two refer to your reward system.  If you have an Intrinsic
Reward system, you enjoy exercise for the sake of exercise.  You
actually like it
now.  It’s fun to you.
Extrinsic Reward means that you may not enjoy doing it, but you’ll do it
anyway because you know that in the long-term you’ll achieve results.
You are sacrificing now for
future goals.

What's your motivation?  This exercise can be very eye-opening.  It will
help you to understand yourself and what drives you.  There is really
no right and wrong way to be, so don’t judge yourself.  It helps to
understand what truly motivates you so that you can use that
information to achieve the results that you desire.  Once you get the
feedback about yourself, you can make adjustments in order to
achieve your best results.

To your health,
