THINK “POSTURE” NOT “PAIN” Why the Site of your Pain isn’t the Problem
You have pain. Let’s say it’s in the knee. It makes sense that you’d want to do exercises that would strengthen the knee, right? Not necessarily.
Although there may be underlying issues in the knee, it is more likely that the knee pain is only the result of an overall postural imbalance. If this is the case, the knee is not to blame. Some simple posture exercises that treat the body as a unit are the key. Very often, the symptom is not where you should focus your attention.
TREAT THE BODY AS A UNIT You cannot affect one part of the body without changing the entire body. Look at the pictures to the right. See how the knees drop in toward each other? They do not look this way because there is something specifically wrong with the knee. Therefore, the way to change this compensation is not just to do knee exercises. We must find the cause, and correct that.
In this particular case, this postural dysfunction is coming from the hips and feet. To focus on the symptom of the knees would do nothing to correct this. But if we were to address the cause, then we would be able to change this dysfunction. The exercise I would recommend for this particular postural imbalance would be foot circles. Of course there are other dysfunctions in the body that we also need to address.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE DYSFUNCTION IS COMING FROM? To help you out, I have added over 25 new Posture Identification pages to the website, each detailing a specific postural dysfunction and giving you tools to begin to correct it. Compare your posture to the pictures online. Then you can get a general idea of what exercises you may need.
This is a great educational tool that I am excited to be able to offer. After using it, come in for an in depth evaluation to get a specific “menu” that addresses all of your postural dysfunctions in one quick sequence.
